Statement on the DISCLOSE Act

by Candice Miller on June 25, 2010

U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) released the following statement regarding her vote against the DISCLOSE Act:

“When I was sworn into Congress I took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. Today, I believe I upheld my oath by voting against the DISCLOSE Act which seeks to selectively limit rights granted by the sacred First Amendment to our Constitution. Our Founding Fathers would be appalled not only by the attempt to limit free speech, but even more so by the fact that the speech this legislation seeks to arbitrarily limit is political speech while an election is approaching when that freedom is most important. This legislation was clearly contrived for partisan advantage by the majority in the House and has all of the hallmarks of their previous legislative efforts as it includes special backroom deals for their political allies and stifles their political opponents. Our Constitution calls for equal protection under the law, and this legislation clearly violates that fundamental principle of our democracy.

“If this legislation becomes law it must be quickly reviewed by our court system and I am confident that it will be found that it violates the fundamental freedoms enshrined in our Constitution that every American holds dear.”
