U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following comments regarding President Obama’s latest stimulus plan:
When President Obama and his allies in Congress passed the economic stimulus plan last year they promised that it would create three million jobs and unemployment would not exceed 8%. Since that time our economy has lost millions of jobs and unemployment is nearing 10% nationally. The facts are clear; the stimulus has failed to provide the promised jobs and all this Administration has to offer is more of the same. Continuing to do the same thing and expecting a different result is the height of irresponsibility. We cannot spend and borrow our way into prosperity. I’ve heard it said that more people think Elvis is alive than that the economic stimulus is working.
What we need in Washington is fiscal discipline and to hold the line on taxes. The President is apparently ready to also announce needed tax cuts for research and development, but these cuts will likely not result in a net increase in jobs due to the tax increases on business he is expected to propose. He also refuses to address the problem that is creating the most uncertainty for families and job creators: the pending massive tax increase coming on January 1st. If President Obama really wants do something that will help provide the certainty job creators need, then we must first extend all of the tax cuts set to expire at the end of this year while at the same time beginning the difficult work of reigning in out-of-control government spending. Then I will be glad to work with the Administration on other tax cuts that will help jumpstart our economy.
