House takes first step toward saving Selfridge A-10s

Congress has taken the first step toward saving the 24 A-10 aircraft at Selfridge Air National Guard Base that had been marked for extinction.

At 2:30 this morning, the House Armed Services Committee adopted a provision which suspends all proposed reductions in Air National Guard aircraft across the country. That includes the 107th Fighther Squadron at Selfridge which flies A-10 Thunderbolts and employs about 650 people.

  • Rep. Candice Miller said the change to the Defense Department budget was unanimously approved by the committee and included in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2013.
  • That bill now goes to the House floor where a vote is expected sometime next week. A Harrison Township Republican, Miller has lobbied against the Pentagon cuts planned for the A-10s and she said she’s confident that the bill will pass the House.
  • “I predict it will pass, now that it’s on the House floor,” Miller said this morning. “We’re talking to folks over there (in the Senate) and trying to build some momentum.”
