Above, a crowd of about 300 people joined U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller in bowing their heads to the fallen heroes on Monday during Romeo’s Memorial Day celebration at the Romeo Cemetery. “The spirit of democracy is understood by no one better than our veterans,” said Miller. The ceremony followed a short parade from 32 Mile Road to the cemetery. Miller bestowed the honor of a Bronze Star on Robert Edwards during the ceremony. Edwards, who had not previously received this medal, earned three Bronze Stars, two for heroism and one for meritorious service, while serving in Vietnam from October of 1967 to June of 1968. Edwards was honored with a standing ovation. Lonnie Zemke, senior vice commander of the VFW Post 2052, shared the honor of the traditional rifle salute with his brother, Richard Zemke, and his sister, Kathy (Zemke) Wilcox. Lonnie and Richard are Vietnam vets and Kathy is a vet of Desert Storm and Iraq. Kathy wore a hat worn by her day during World War II at the salute.
