Rep. Candice MillerĀ  to honor WWII vet

U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township, will honor a World War II veteran at 11 a.m. today at her Shelby Township office, 48701 Van Dyke Ave..

Cpl. William A. Pollauf, of Algonac, will receive the Prisoner of War, World War II Victor and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medals as well as a Bronze Service Star and WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button. The army also issued a Certificate of Release from Active Duty, which confirms his service status.

Pollauf served in the 443rd Division Field and 3rd Division B-Battery Artillery of the army. He was captured by Germans on Feb. 14, 1943 during the Battle of Kasserine Passin in Tunisia, North Africa and was sent by train to Moosburg Munich, Stalag 7-A, a German prisoner of war camp.

He was a prisoner of war for 27 months, and spent time in two other camps before he was freed by the Russians in April 1945.
