Independence never fades

This year, as we have nearly every year since the  nation’s founding, Americans will celebrate the Fourth of July with parades,  picnics and fireworks. It is, after all, a birthday party marking an anniversary  all citizens share.

It is also a celebration of the resilience and  longevity of the American idea — the notion that human beings enjoy the right to  liberty and self governance. Over and again in the 237 years since the first  Fourth, we have seen how dear of a price it is to preserve that idea. We owe a  great thanks to those in uniform who, as our greatest president, Abraham  Lincoln, said at Gettysburg, “gave the last full measure of devotion” to defend  it, and to those who continue to serve today.

We are rightly proud of our national heritage, a  heritage rooted in the Declaration that:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men  are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain  unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of  Happiness.” That is more than reason enough to throw a party. An exceptional  party for an exceptional nation.
