Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) on Monday urged the Obama administration to cut off aid to countries in Central America and Mexico until they help slow the influx of illegal immigrants into the U.S.
Miller suggested modifying trade agreements and rescinding foreign aid to motivate action from the Central American countries and Mexico. Three-quarters of the child migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border are from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala
“To date, the administration has been slow to act and has only offered to send more money to the countries that have instigated this crisis,” Miller said.
Miller praised Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) for supporting the foreign aid cutoff.
“It is an international humanitarian crisis that demands immediate decisive action,” Miller said. “I welcome their support, and I look forward to more members, from both parties and both chambers, joining me in this important call to action.”
