Protecting Our Magnificent Great Lakes
A primary advocacy for me during my entire time in public service has been the protection of our most valuable natural resource, our magnificent Great Lakes.
In recent years we have seen too many chemical spills and other pollutants entering our lakes. That is why I led the fight to create a federal – local partnership to install a water quality monitoring system in the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair. This system is a model for federal and local cooperation and helps to ensure that pollutants do not gain entry into our drinking water.
Additionally I have fought for the passage of the St. Clair River – Lake St. Clair Management Plan which will provide funding to keep our lakes clean, defend against invasive species and ensure that they continue to advance our economy through shipping and recreational use.
This fight is important because our lakes are not only an environmental treasure and economic impetus for our region, they are our very identity. I will continue fight to protect, preserve and defend our Great Lakes.
